Choosing a club: general guidance

General advice that applies anywhere, not to one city.

1. 1Start with the right level. If your child is new to soccer, look for recreational programs near you before jumping into competitive leagues. Most clubs offer both tracks.
2. 2Check coaching credentials. Ask whether coaches hold U.S. Soccer grassroots licenses and have completed SafeSport training.
3. 3Visit a practice before signing up. Watch how coaches interact with kids. A good environment matters more than a winning record.
4. 4Ask about communication. How will the club keep you updated on schedules, cancellations, and payments?
5. 5Look for bilingual support. If your family speaks Spanish, find a club that communicates in both languages. It makes a real difference for parents and players.
6. 6Understand the commitment. Recreational teams usually practice once or twice a week. Competitive teams may practice three to four times plus weekend games and travel tournaments.
7. 7Budget for the full season. Registration is just the start. Factor in uniforms, equipment, tournament fees, and travel when comparing clubs.
